Supporting Autechre is not a slot that gets handed out lightly. Roel Funcken took it at Melkweg in Amsterdam last August, and takes it again at Doornroosje this October.

The groundwork for that goes back to 1999 and Part 1, the first record he made with his brother Don as Funckarma. Thirteen years of that project ran through Skam, Schematic, Sublight, Neo Ouija, n5MD and Warp offshoot Arcola, with a spread of side projects alongside it: Shadow Huntaz, Scone with Kettel, and Legiac with film composer Cor Bolten.

The brothers launched Funcken Industry in 2009, and Roel's solo catalogue got going properly the year after with Vade on Ad Noiseam. Analogical Force, Science Cult and Touched Music have all carried his work since, and his live schedule has taken in La Biennale di Venezia and a 2024 ADE showcase alongside fractal artist Julius Horsthuis.

Kine 3 is his third outing for EC Underground, the South Florida label we know from Gliesse's CEERS premiere and Waveform Sessions #8. Both previous collaborations, Data Curation 1 and Data Curation 2, sold out. This one arrives on September 4th as a fifteen-track double CD limited to a hundred numbered copies, with two extra pieces on the digital edition. 4ehmth is our first listen.

Those who are familiar with Funckarma will feel at home with the track. The glitchy, chopped drum patterns may screw wildly around the soundstage, yet the production still feels like they have been placed into the mix with mathematical precision.

Sonically, the track is an exhilarating, atmospheric excursion through a metallic soundscape. Experimental IDM meets mangled breaks in our favourite production on the album. On a whole, this is a fantastic follow up to the Kine series’ previous outing.
