Ma Haiping works out of Shanghai, and in 2013 he became the first artist from China to put out a record through a Detroit techno imprint, when Scan 7's Cratesavers International released 'The Chinese Connection'.
The music first reached him over the radio in the nineties, and he had started producing around the turn of the millennium. A lot of his education happened at VOID, the Shanghai techno night that brought DJ Bone, Surgeon, Orlando Voorn and Robert Hood through the city.
In 2021, Jeff Mills' Axis Records released his album 'Chang'e-4', named for China's mission to the lunar far side, and it came with a rework from Orlando Voorn, whose 'Detroit is the Name' we premiered with a DJ Godfather remix. He has also released through Soma and through Voorn's own Nightvisions.
Molecular Recordings has been putting out techno from London since 1994, with DJ Bone and Chris Liebing in the catalogue, and it is a label we keep coming back to, from Joshua Calleja's 'Breaking Patterns' to NØNE's 'XX 29'. Ma Haiping has history here too, with 'Oblivion' and his own XX series entry, 'XX 8', in 2022. 'Velocity Unlocked' is MOL056D, four techno tracks.
And one detail from the early days: around 2004 he spent two years working through the Tresor, Transmat, Underground Resistance and R&S back catalogues in catalogue number order.
