Release card for Dam Swindle 'I Want You' on a red background: the two of them stand against a pale blue sky, one holding a bunch of red roses, the other holding a lit red smoke flare above his head, with the DJ-Kicks logo in the corner.

Artist: Dam Swindle feat. Allysha Joy
Title: 'I Want You'
Label: !K7

Dam Swindle are the next name on DJ-Kicks, and 'I Want You' is the first piece of it to go out on its own. Allysha Joy takes the vocal. The mix itself follows in November through !K7, and the label says no Dutch act has been asked to do one before.

The duo are Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, fifteen years into it. They run Heist Recordings, which they started in 2013, and they co-own the Amsterdam station RadioRadio. Heist reached its hundredth release in May with 'House of House', a compilation the pair assembled themselves. Kerri Chandler, Louie Vega, Folamour, Cinthie and DJ Sneak are all on it.

The tracks they wrote for the mix were picked out of a stack of about thirty demos, each one aimed at a particular point in the sequence. Smeets: "It was close to writing a whole album." The rest of the selection went the other way entirely, hunting for records nobody else had. Smeets again: "We wanted tracks that were special to us, but which nobody knew. Those $5 bargains in the bin at your local record store."

Getting there took some arguing. Dales wanted the mix rooted in the club, Smeets wanted the looser territory of Henrik Schwarz's 2006 edition, and they settled between the two. Dales: "There were definitely moments where we were kind of bartering. But in the end we always arrive at a point where we're both completely at peace." Nachtbraker built the intro and outro out of fragments of their old interviews.

DJ-Kicks has been through WT recently from the other end, in our write-up of Anish Kumar, DJ GTi and Sofia Kourtesis' 'Radio Nacional', where DJ GTi turned up on Kourtesis' edition of the series.

Out now. Dam Swindle have it on Bandcamp, and the mix is up for pre-order alongside it.
