Leeds-based artist and academic Michael Coldwell has spent the better part of two decades building one of the UK experimental underground's most distinctive and genuinely eccentric bodies of work.
A member of the Urban Exploration collective and a researcher into the hauntology of media at the University of Leeds, he previously recorded dub-inspired electronica under the name Micoland before evolving into the Conflux Coldwell project; an ever-shifting vehicle for radiophonic experimentation, hauntological electronica, drone, and field recording that has earned him coverage in The Wire, Electronic Sound, and A Closer Listen.
His soundtrack work for the award-winning documentary Views from Sunk Island was released on Subexotic Records in 2021, and his 2017 shortwave radio exploration AM made The Wire's Top Ten Experimental releases of that year.
Away With the Fairies is the premiere track from his forthcoming Echolalia album on Bulletdodge Records; the label we know well from our exclusive premiere of Renwartherger's Random, which featured a remix from none other than Matthew Herbert, and which has previously featured Robert Hood, Appleblim, and Besoliga.
As one might expect, the track follows a distinctly experimental curve. It draws heavily on that hauntological sound; pulsating, glistening synths bubble gently, while barely perceptible yet strangely recognisable voices manifest spectrally, before dissolving back into the ether as quickly as they appeared.
