Artist: Andaloop
Title: 'Deep Times EP'
Label: Waswotsch Music
Andaloop is one of the founders of Waswotsch and works out of Zurich. The name has been in circulation far longer than the label has. Juno's DJ chart archive has Andaloop filing charts as a Waswotsch selector back in 2011, long before the first record came out. Discogs lists an alias, Matto Belmondo, and a group, The Callboys, and on home turf the DJ sets sometimes come as a pair with Sonica.
The label's catalogue opens in 2020 with the compilation 'Coming Out I', and it runs as a scattered network of friends rather than a single-city roster. Styro2000, MRZ, Rjega, Smør&Brød, Cosili, Fabio Papa, Thomas Wood and Bang Goes all have records on it, and the crew takes the whole thing out on the road for takeover nights at Kraftfeld in Winterthur.
The 'Deep Times EP' is the first Andaloop solo release on the label. Until now the name has turned up there in collaboration, on tracks made with Idealist for that first compilation and for 'Coming Out II'. The two originals are deep house, built from live takes on a large collection of hardware.
'Tribute 122' honours Mike Huckaby and quotes his voice. Huckaby ran the techno room at Detroit's Record Time store, put out the 'Deep Transportation' records and 'The Jazz Republic', and built sample libraries with Native Instruments and Ableton. He also taught production to kids at the city's Youthville programme, which is the part of the CV his peers tend to lead with. He sadly died in April 2020, after a stroke and then a COVID infection caught in hospital. He was only 54.
The remix comes from Michal Ho, born in Switzerland and raised partly in South Africa, whose first solo record was 'Frisky' for Tuning Spork in 2005. He has released through Kindisch, Get Physical, Textone, Contexterrior and Little Helpers since, and he is half of Samim & Michal alongside Samim, whose 'Heater' was inescapable in 2007. His own Waswotsch records are 'OMW' and 'Local Lifeforms'.
Out now on Waswotsch. The label is over on Bandcamp, and while you are there we also wrote up Styro2000's 'Alles Quatsch EP' from the same catalogue.
