The Styro2000 name has been a fixture of the Swiss electronic underground since the early 2000s; a catalogue built across releases on Daro Recordings and Unalike Music that has earned its keeper the "Swiss veteran" label for good reason.
Waswotsch, the Zurich-based imprint that has built a reputation for championing a distinctly irreverent approach to electronic music across a catalogue of forward thinking releases, now hosts the latest addition to that body of work. He describes this production as dadaist, and as it progresses we can see why.
Styro2000 gets things off to a wigged-out start thanks to the psychedelic flex of minimal house bubbler Deklean, which is exactly the kind of track you want to be dropping when everyone in the room has started feeling… it. An absolutely brilliant start.
Acid globules bob around the beginning of the next track, Rane PI 14 Service Manual; a track that succeeds in cranking the wonk up a notch. Vocal chatter takes us up to a fucking beautiful little break that introduces the dancefloor friendly elements while retaining the air of weird.
We climb into the Wrongcubator next; a track whose title couldn’t describe itself any better. Gloriously bendy bass squiggles sit alongside some kinetic percs that really emphasise the top end to contrast the bassy farts that erupt out of the mix every so often. Hold onto your pants for the outrageous drops at the two and four minute interludes.
Our journey ends with Audioautist. This production doesn’t let up on the gonky energy, going all rubber clown for a blobbishly funky close to proceedings, alongside the Kraftwerk-ish vocals and more woodblock than you can shake a... erm… stick at…
Deffo worth snaffling right now on Bandcamp.
