Versa 'Reset' release card: the square sleeve centred on a warm tan background. The sleeve is a photograph of white clouds under a deep blue sky, with SMOKIN SESSIONS painted across a peach tinted cloud in white graffiti bubble letters with black outlines, and paint running down in drips beneath them.

Smokin' Sessions is a UK label that opened its catalogue in 2007 with Synkro's 'Hold Tight'. The label gave Djrum his debut record in 2010, and Biome and Reso have both had releases there too.

Versa is a bass music and dub producer, based in Bristol. He first appeared on Smokin' Sessions in 2011 with '5AM', and two more records followed with Rowl. 'Reset' is the third single from his 'Rotation' EP, and his first record for the label in more than a decade. They are pressing vinyl again now, most recently for Rowl's 'Signal' EP.

Versa comes out of a label that has always covered music with bassier leanings. Looking through their early back-cat illustrates such, so it is no surprise that this latest single follows suit.

Subsurface Selections

Subsurface Selections

The best releases in UKG, Bass, Breaks, Dub & 140. Every Friday. No filler.

The track very much leans into a garage flex, albeit with a dubstep vein running through its core. A sublime breakbeat carries the momentum, while a rumbling sub bass takes care of the bottom end (hence the dubstep leaning). Absolutely one for the headz…

Grab it on Bandcamp, where Deep Heads keeps the Smokin' Sessions catalogue. The 'Rotation EP' it comes off is on pre-order there too.
