Berlin-based producer Seddig returns to Ben Sims’ consistently excellent Symbolism imprint with a massive five-track collection.
Cutting his teeth under Ableton co-creator Robert Henke, Seddig has carved out a serious reputation for his cerebral, meticulously detailed brand of techno, which has previously seen him also land releases on the likes of Hardgroove.
The title track opens proceedings with a genuine sense of its nomenclature. Kartharsis evolves with measured precision, building from syncopated, echoing zaps into an entrancing, peak-time workout that slowly tightens the sonic tension like a thumbscrew across its run time.
If the opener is an exercise in building pressure, Unfazed provides the masterful release. Stripping things back to a minimal rhythmic skeleton and synthetic crackles, the track carries a sonar-like pulse through its opening minute before slowly unfurling into a dense, loopy crescendo of saturated static and distortion.
Turbulence lives up to its title next, shifting the EP into far more aggressive, disjointed territory. Cacophonous layers stack rapidly, pierced by chaotic, off-key acid screeches that genuinely gouge through the track's outer membrane. It is a punishing, jagged workout that represents exactly what the word "techno" was invented to describe.
Stealing the crown as our favourite track on the release, Sixstep drops you squarely into the middle of a sweltering basement space. It possesses an immediate, physical energy, bouncing strobe-like sonic shrapnel off every surface before fracturing into an absolute maelstrom of raw power around the two-minute mark.
Finally, Prism closes the lid on the package. Acting much like its namesake refracting light through glass, the track splits its core components out across a broad sonic spectrum. It is a brilliant piece of sound design that scatters frequencies while retaining a deep, driving cohesion, bringing the collection to a perfectly rounded close.
