Artist: Monotone
Title: 'Baska'
Label: Soft Chroma Recordings

Monotone is two people, which the press release only hints at by switching to the plural halfway down. Tentapes, which put out their 'Fictional Science', calls them one of the freshest duos in electronic music, and a review of their Mindwaves Music record names them as Kimi Recor and Francesco Presotto, who also work separately as EX.HALE and SCHNALLO.

Apart, they each keep a solo project going. EX.HALE is Presotto's, filed by his labels as dark techno and hard techno, and 'Abstract Blue' was his first record for Sonic Groove, the Berlin techno and industrial label Adam X owns. That one dates back to 1995 and has run past eighty releases. Recor's is SCHNALLO, which put out 'white fluffy'.

That Mindwaves record, 'Call Your Friends', opened the label's G.DUBS strand. Mindwaves-Music itself was founded in Berlin at the end of 2007 as a home for what it calls electronic niche music. Tentapes is the younger of the two, working out of Venice since 2023.

Subsurface Selections

The best releases in UKG, Bass, Breaks, Dub & 140. Every Friday. No filler.

Soft Chroma Recordings is the new address. The label says it was born in 2023 to publish abstract, experimental, ambient and spoken work, matching music with videos, books and other forms of art, and its catalogue so far has taken in 'Subharmonic Exercises', the 'Yellow Stripes EP' and the various-artists 'Fedayn At Night: The Resistance Will Never Stop'.

Two tracks on this one. The label's note names LTJ Bukem, Makoto and Doc Scott as the reference points the duo were working from, and puts the EP forward as a statement about innovation and respect for the history of clubbing.

Fans of d&b should check out Waveform Sessions #10: Speedy, an hour of V Recordings tracks.

Soft Chroma have the pair of them on Bandcamp, out now.
