Artist: Mav
Title: 'Glitch'
Label: Revok Records
Mav builds her records on modular machines, live, one session at a time. The press notes say there are no patch sheets and no MIDI patterns behind the four originals here, only what came out of single takes.
She is a DJ, producer and live electronic musician, and her own listing puts her on the dark and industrial side of techno. She plays the Dublin Modular nights in the city, and her first outing for Revok Records was 'Plague', two years before this one.
She has set out why at length, too. The press release carries her own words: "My music is the sonic expression of my feelings. During the dark times that we are living in, as a trans person I feel particularly marginalised and at risk." She goes on to say she wants that out of her chest rather than kept in, and turned into community and solidarity.
Three remixers close the record. Cailín is the one readers here will know: we reviewed her 'Cosmic Sonic' album and she opened our Ignition Sequence series, and she answered Mav's modular with her own Moog. Erase (NOR) takes the title track, and her own listing has her working hardware driven too. Last Eden has 'Diazepam'.
Revok Records runs out of London and deals in dark techno singles and EPs. Mav is straight back on it after this, remixing Mari Mari's 'Maverick Revolution'. The label has been through these pages before as well, when Kirril put a session together largely out of his own Revok material.
Out now. Clamp onto yours at Revok Records.
