Artist: Mat Frank
Title: 'Floor On Fire'
Label: SO KOOL

Mat Frank is 28, based in Perth, and runs his own house-building business when he is not making records. "A bricklayer by trade, and a DJ by night" is how he puts it on his triple j Unearthed page, where he also names Martin Garrix as an early inspiration and 'One I Want' sits as his pick.

SO KOOL has taken most of his output, running from 'See Through You' in 2025 through 'Wish You Were Mine', 'Lemon', 'Deep N Tight', 'Ya Speaker' and 'S.A.Y.' at a rate of roughly one every couple of months. He has stepped outside it too, for KOMPLEX Recordings and for 'Anxious', which No Gimmicks put out in June and Magnetic Magazine premiered.

Three of those records are other people's songs. Technotronic's 'Pump Up The Jam' came out of Belgium in 1989, and it topped the charts in five countries. Gala's 'Freed From Desire' followed out of Italy in 1996 and has never really gone away. And 'Wish You Were Mine' carries writing credits for Stevie Wonder, Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy, which puts a Motown song somewhere underneath it.

'Floor On Fire' is his own, and it is tech house, out in an extended mix and a radio edit. Frank's account of the brief is short: "The goal was simple: make something that gets people moving the second the drop hits."

SO KOOL trades in tech house and deep house, and keeps an older catalogue listed separately on Beatport. MdM is on the roster too, with 'El Nuestro'. There is no Bandcamp page for any of it, so Beatport is the only counter.

Out now. 'Floor On Fire' is on Beatport, and for another tech house single from the picks we wrote up CAZ's 'Smooth Tip'.
