Artist: Jacob Meehan
Title: 'Mini Revelations Remixes'
Label: Gay Groove Records
Jacob Meehan was raised in Chicago and has lived in Berlin since 2016, and these days the year splits between there and Los Angeles. He is resident DJ and programme director at Buttons, the long-running Berlin queer party he co-organises with his partner Danilo Rosato, and one of the organisers of WHOLE.
WHOLE was started in 2017 by a group of Berlin party crews. It has run at the Ferropolis site in Gräfenhainichen since 2019, and the bill is built from collectives rather than headliners, with Cocktail d'Amore, Gegen, Herrensauna, Lecken and Pornceptual among the Berlin names on it.
The Chicago grounding came from digging at Gramaphone Records, where the Cleveland-born producer John Roberts first took him, and from early sets at Wang's, a Boystown bar where he and a former partner put together a little club running on a Funktion One rig. The lineage he names is Derrick Carter, Frankie Knuckles and Michael Serafini, who owns Gramaphone.
He launched Gay Groove Records in 2026 as a home for his own productions, and the label opened with his debut EP, 'Mini Revelations'. Early backing came from Shaun J. Wright, the Chicago vocalist who sang on Hercules & Love Affair's 'Blue Songs' and co-founded Twirl with Alinka, and from Nita Aviance, one half of The Carry Nation.
The remixes spread wide. 'Conjure' goes to Yazzus, born in Ghana, raised in London and now a resident at Mala Junta in Berlin, whose other remix work takes in Waajeed for Tresor and Kelly Lee Owens for Smalltown Supersound. 'Damier' gets two versions.
One is from Dauwd, born in the States and raised in Wales, a third of African Acid Is The Future, with records on Ghostly International, Kompakt and PSSSH Records and an album, 'Theory of Colours', for Technicolour.
The other is from Michael Lane, who came out of new-wave bands in London and now holds a residency at OXI, as well as playing Tracey.
Out now. 'Mini Revelations Remixes' is on Bandcamp, and for more Chicago lineage there is K'Alexi Shelby's Waveform Sessions mix.
