Cover art for Idle Means' 'Cruise Control EP' on C.I.A.: a dark charcoal sleeve on salmon, the C.I.A 30 logo and the words Computer Integrated Audio in the top corner, IDLE MEANS and Cruise Control in salmon at the centre left, and a repeating pattern of line-drawn speedometer dials filling the right half.

Idle Means is Minor Forms and Royce, two friends who have finally got their names onto the same record. Minor Forms is Justin Mann, one third of Arcatype, with records on Flexout Audio and Sofa Sound Bristol behind him.

The C.I.A. on the sleeve is short for Computer Integrated Audio, and Total Science started it in 1996. The pair still run it, and this one goes out carrying the label's thirtieth anniversary mark. Minor Forms has had records out on it before.

The EP follows a liquid vein, delivering the kind of drum and bass that serves multiple purposes, roughly equating to ‘sofa, headphones, dancefloor’. That is to say you can vibe to this in the comfort of your home just as much as you can get busy to it in a basement.

‘Cruise Control’ follows a minimal bent as the title suggests, with skeletal percussion rattling with precision over the top of a rolling bassline, synth echoes popping sonic shots off into the soundspace. That bassline really starts to snarl in the second half. Be ready for it.

Fellow C.I.A. stablemate Kublai joins proceedings next for the hazy follow-up ‘To Be’, which is a deeply uplifting affair through almost every element, be that the undulating bass, breathy vocals, or those rousing pads. The only touch of melancholy comes from the very subtle lilting piano line that enters the mix every so often.

‘Data Step’ goes full impact on the low end with minimal, techy production underpinning the track. The cybernetic top-end percs are pulled back to give the sub the limelight, which it isn’t shy about adopting.

We’re a sucker for a piano in a drum and bass track, and parting shot ‘Little Number’ pairs a beautiful piano motif with liquid drum programming and soulful vocal samples. Our favourite track on the EP (but not by too long a stretch).
