Night Train, the Hollowpulse long player that preceded this latest collection, was built around a single image: a carriage rattling through rural China in the dead of winter, rain on the glass, headphones in, the listener drifting somewhere between awake and asleep.

It landed on Vivarium Recordings, the experimental and plunderphonics-leaning label run by Daniel Rauch, and picked up a mention in WhiteLight//WhiteHeat’s weekly electronic round-up along the way.

In the months since, Hollowpulse has kept a steady stream of singles moving; a rework of Purity Ring’s Obedear among them, released with the note that it was one of her favourite songs to get her hands on. 2am Hypnopompia is what comes next, still unattached to a face or a (real) name.

The album follows Hollowpulse’s penchant for ghostly, haunting sounds, albeit this time with a significantly more ambient bent to it. She frequently describes her music as “ghost house” and it is easy to see why. Even the theme of this latest collection is somewhat otherworldly.

We open with the dreamy glow of Fridge Light, ethereal pads growing in intensity as we rouse from our slumber. Low Hum, which follows, continues this ambient theme with a low-slung, skeletal drum beat blending into hazy synths as we continue to traverse the fog between the dream world and reality.

Settling In allows us to do anything but; its droning pads and hadal sub bass creating an undercurrent of unease as the track develops, its melancholic synth plucks setting up the next track’s foreboding perfectly.

We are joined by Shadowy Figures in the Living Room and while there is no sense that these silhouettes are not here to cause harm, there is still a spectral quality about them thanks to the glimmer of the bell synth that plays throughout.

Cold Sip of Water offers up an aqueous quality as liquidised synths engulf our dreaming vessel. The fluid theme continues as an Early Morning Downpour threatens to rouse us completely from our slumber, instead permeating into our night visions. We can hear those muffled droplets if we listen closely.

We close on another ambient tip as our conscience relinquishes itself once again to the dream world in Return to Slumber; a beautiful end to an accomplished piece of ambient art.
