The aptly titled It all starts with this on Who’s Susan? marks the debut EP from Amsterdam native Jerrau. While his Bandcamp profile modestly claims he is "new to this," his reputation as a tastemaker on the Amsterdam club circuit suggests otherwise. He transitions to the studio with the same raw energy he brings to the booth, and these tracks perfectly capture that dancefloor intuition.
The opener, Massive, lives up to its name by delivering expansive 90s rave synths over a gurgling, snake-like bassline. Its steady 4/4 pulse channels a classic era of dance music, creating a sense of instant euphoria.
Aether follows, featuring fellow label-mate DJ OSX. Whether by design or just a lucky coincidence, the track captures the neon-lit speed of Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road. Pixelated synths dart through a solid techno framework with an infectious, high-speed energy.
"I did a funny thing to you," taunts the vocal hook of Escapism; a mischievous invitation into a track full of Juke-inflected breakbeat energy. A heavy kick drum anchors a dark, driving bassline that builds a sense of unstoppable momentum.
Jerrau closes the record with Renegades, a wide-screen techno workout. Bright synth layers weave together as the percussion steadily ramps up, leading to a standout drop at the three-minute mark. It is a great display of tension and release, providing a powerful final statement for a very impressive debut.
