Ignition Sequence cover for issue eight: a dark industrial control console covered in labelled switches, knobs and dial gauges, with a red readout reading T minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 above the line IGNITION SEQUENCE INITIATED: DJ HONESTY, and a screen beside it showing a figure breaking up into static.

This issue of Ignition Sequence is brought to you in partnership with BC Releases: New Bandcamp Releases in One Playlist

Ignition Sequence gives a guest artist five slots and asks them to explain all five. We do the research, they do the verdicts. Issue eight belongs to DJ Honesty: Glenn Underground at the top of his list, NightFunk at the other end of it, and a producer who teaches biology for a living somewhere in the middle.

Anyway, commencing countdown…

Ignition Sequence #8: DJ Honesty…

Image of DJ Honesty from the chest upwards, wearing a white t-shirt and blue snapback cap. There is a blue sky in the background with a body of water creating a horizon.

DJ Honesty is Hans Schaaf, and the records start in the mid 90s under a different name. As Honey Drop he put a run of twelve inches into Cabinet Records between 1996 and 2003, out of a Berlin he had been DJing in since the start of the decade. There is a Slope project with Daniel Paul as well, broken beat and jazz for Sonar Kollektiv, Mermaid and Slopemusic, and a Suparaw one with Woody.

Then came five years of cutting other people's records. From 2008 to 2013 he did vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting at Calyx Mastering in Berlin, which means a good deal of his work from that period is in record bags with his name nowhere on the sleeve. It is in the runout groove instead. Pull out an Innervisions, !K7 or 50Weapons twelve from those years and you may well find the word Honesty scratched into the dead wax.

Since 2013 the records have gone back out under his own name: Sebo K's Scenario, Bass Culture, Cabinet once more, Quality Vibe Records and Syncrophone Recordings. He works out of Lisbon and still plays Heideglühen in Berlin, and the rest of the DJ history takes in Tresor, Output in New York, D-Edge in São Paulo and Glastonbury. 'Unknown Pleasures' landed on No Speakers on 28 September 2026, with Arkajo of Genius Of Time remixing the title track. It is a twelve, and Yoyaku in Paris have it.

Here are DJ Honesty's five.

BC Releases: New Bandcamp Releases in One Playlist

Promo graphic for the BC Releases web app: the line Listen to Bandcamp new releases in one playlist set in white on black, beside a screenshot of the app's dark New releases panel showing genre filter chips for techno, dub techno, ambient, experimental, house and idm, and a release card opened out to its track list with running times.

All of your new releases in one place.

Bandcamp sends an email for every new release from the artists and labels you follow, which can be overwhelming…

Bas Dobbelaer built a free web app that pulls those new releases into a single playlist. You can listen through everything that came out without opening one email or tab at a time. Waveforms, BPM, and key are included for every track as well.

Label what’s worth buying as you listen, and come back to your picks when you’re ready to support the artists.

Your data is saved in your browser: imports, triage choices and listening progress are all stored locally, so there’s no account needed.

Number 5: NightFunk 'Groove'

In 2020 NightFunk took a Beatport number one with an official remix of Technotronic's 'Pump Up The Jam', a Belgian record reworked by a Belgian producer. He is Dennis Hermans and he works out of Mol. Lee Foss got to him before anyone else did: he heard 'Romeo', dropped it into a Burning Man chart and handed him an EP on South Of Saturn that July. 'Groove' followed on Solid Grooves Raw in November 2020.

DJ Honesty: "The message is clear! 'Groove is in the heart, Funk is in my soul, music is an art, keeps me on a roll.' This and a rolling bassline make it for me. Whenever I drop this one, it just works."

Solid Grooves Raw have it on Beatport.

Number 4: Billy Dalessandro 'La Deux'

Billy Dalessandro co-founded Siteholder Records, and he came to electronic music as a classically trained pianist. 'La Deux' comes off 'Cracktime', the album Soniculture put out in 2011 on CD and vinyl with Kompakt handling distribution. He was born in Chicago and works out of Montreal these days.

DJ Honesty: "Perfect track to shake up things when the floor is a bit stagnant. The combination of a deep, acidic groove with those swirling jazzy horn stabs is for sure a wake-up call."

'Cracktime' is up in full on Bandcamp.

Number 3: Larry de Kat 'You Heard That Right'

Larry de Kat runs his own label, Katnip Records, and before that there were records on Slapfunk and Dungeon Meat. Brawther backed the early Slapfunk material and Tristan da Cunha is the one who put him in touch with Juno. 'You Heard That Right' opens the 'Purrrversions EP', which Dungeon Meat pressed in 2016. He started out on guitar as a kid and worked through Fruity Loops, Reason and an MPC2000XL to get here. And he teaches biology in a small town outside Utrecht.

DJ Honesty: "Starting an energetic house set with this one is always a good choice. Funky bassline, pounding shuffling drums, and a scream. You don't need more to get the party started."

Get your drop at his own Bandcamp.

Number 2: Nick Hanzo 'Like Glass But Candy'

Nick Hanzo runs Belly Dance Services, a label he set up with Yaman, and he has records on Playground Records, Duro and Play Pal. He started the Schmusesalon club night and the audiovisual collective Wiener Endorphine too, both in Vienna. 'Like Glass But Candy' is on the 'Candy Places' EP, which the Austrian label fortunea released in December 2021. They had him on the 'fortunea 10' compilation first, with 'Veni Vide'.

DJ Honesty: "This is pure raw old-school rave energy! Great build-up of the groove with an irresistible rimshot pattern that already works on its own. Then a simple synth stab with a sweet melody underneath in the break, building up again to a climax. Mental!"

The EP is on fortunea's Bandcamp.

Number 1: Glenn Underground 'Indians & Bagpipes (Professor Inc Takes Mix)'

Top of the list is Glenn Crocker, releasing since 1992, when the 'Different Sides EP' went out on Dance Mania. Thirteen albums have followed, along with a twelve inch and remix count nobody has published. He was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago and never moved away. Strictly Jaz Unit is his label, and Boo Williams, Ron Trent, Vick Lavender and Anthony Nicholson are the crew around it. He told Juno Daily in 2025 that roughly 2,000 tracks are sitting on his hard drive in various states of finish, and that Boo Williams is the one who remembers what they are called.

The pick is not the original. 'Indians & Bagpipes' first turned up on Gotsoul Records in 2006, a twelve with his own CVO rub on one side and a Ricardo Miranda remix on the other. Six years later the French label REVE ran it again on a split with The P.J. Project, and that is the record the Professor Inc mix lives on. The other remix on it comes from K'Alexi Shelby, who took the Waveform Sessions decks for us.

DJ Honesty: "One of my all-time faves. A masterpiece example of how to work with just a few elements: no variations on the drums or bass, a constant pad, just layering and building. Then comes that perfectly simple, emotional synth solo. You can't play this one at any time, but when the time is right…"

Clamp onto the twelve at Beatport.

That's the five

Thanks to DJ Honesty for the five, and for writing something about every one of them instead of handing over a list of titles. Eight issues in and nobody has fobbed us off yet.
