Steel City Dance Discs was built in Newcastle, the Australian one, which also goes by the Steel City, and has since been exported to London. The catalogue is heavy on names you will know: KETTAMA’s ‘Archangel’, ‘Air Maxes’ with Shady Nasty and Fred again.., Tim Reaper, DJ Heartstring and Clouds, with remixes from Chris Stussy, Randomer and Hodge along the way.

‘Off The Books’ is the third instalment of the label’s Hazardous Material series, four tracks from a DJ Carpenter the label introduces as Stockholm based. It went out one track at a time until the fourth completed the set, so the whole thing is out now.

In Stockholm he is a resident DJ and a co-founder of the Nokta Servo club collective, and he is on Steel City’s own Warehouse Project bill, in the Depot alongside KETTAMA. And yes, before any of this he really was a carpenter.

The EP launches with Off the Books, a breaksy techno track and one we’re absolutely certain is going to do some serious damage in the club. The combo of breakbeats and a 4/4 techno kick gives this track a real rave flavour; one for switching your crowd up to “utterly berserk” status (which as we all know comes just after “apeshit”).

Open the Bag comes next, with a distinctly dark UKG vein running through the production (even down to the grime-style vocal). Wait for the elements all to lock in though; pure bliss before a killer breakdown at the mid-point to give those subs a test.

We’re on a rave flex again next with Backhanders, a soaring piece complete with some undeniably trance-y pads segueing in a superb rubber-band synth sound and an euphoric peak session.

Keeps Me Awake closes the EP without letting the energy die one iota. In fact, if anything, the final track piles a bit more of the energy on thanks to that thundering kick. Another one for fans of that old-school ravey trance sound.
